Wishaw Printing Company are one of the few printers in the UK still printing by Letterpress, in addition to the other modern print processes. As a family run company who have been going for over 30 years, we are proud that we still have truly skilled staff in this ?traditional craft.

Letterpress is ideal for really special jobs like quality invitations, business cards, wedding stationery, personal writing paper and much more. This centuries old process works by applying ink to the face of metal type and then pressing the paper or card onto the type and has been used to print everything from bibles to newspapers.

Today we use our Letterpress machinery for specialised work, using our original metal type which is already 50+ years old and is used over and over again . . . you don’t get greener than that! Being a versatile system Letterpress printing can also be achieved by using printing blocks rather than metal type. This allows the modern designer a route to print their designs in Letterpress.

Promotional pens can be personalised using a number of different methods, one of which is pad printing. Considered one of the most versatile printing processes, pad impression is most popular because of its power to print on compound angles and three-dimensional objects. With increasingly stylised and ergonomic printed pens and other promotional items on the market, pad impression is the obvious choice for a clear, outlined image.

Pad printing is an collateral offset printing process through which a two-dimensional image can be transferred to a three-dimensional surface. This method of impression is comprised of four components: a printing plate (generally made of steel); a silicone transfer pad; quick-drying, solvent-based ink; and a substrate (in our case, printed pens).

As you can well imagine, the printed pens industry is only one of many for which pad printing is extremely suitable. The unique characteristics of silicone enable the pad to lift an image from a flat plane and imprint it on a variety of surfaces, making it adaptable to multiple applications. Consequently, pad impression is used to print graphics on matchbox toy cars, golf balls, sporting equipment, automotive parts, medical devices, television and computer components, and clothing. With such a flexible method of printing, there’s no limit to where your merchandising ideas can take you.

The world is becoming increasingly environment conscious and like all other industrial sectors, the printing industry can also do a lot by adopting newer methods of green printing. . For those who are not aware, the printing industry ranks fourth in consuming energy and poses as a formidable threat for environmental preservation. The principal advantage that green printing is it uses recycled material and thus the adverse effect of the process on the environment is minimal.

One of the first things for green printing is to orient your design in a way that avoids excess bleeding and large ink areas. As a matter of fact, this will help you to print faster and at reduced cost.

It is common knowledge that paper production depletes forests, water, and energy supplies. In fact, research studies reveal that producing one ton of virgin uncoated paper requires three tons of wood, 19,075 gallons of water, and generates 2,278 pounds of solid waste. Moreover, many white papers are bleached via a chlorination process that releases dangerous chemicals and pollutants into the water and air.

Printing companies are responsible for the harmful volatile organic compounds known to be VOCs as they use a lot of petrol based inks. Use vegetable-based inks or soy inks instead of the conventional petroleum-based inks. These alternatives are both low in VOCs and competitively priced. Soy and vegetable-based inks are derived from a renewable resource, unlike petroleum based inks. Again, unlike petroleum inks, they do not contain undesirable toxins and carcinogens. Besides, soy and vegetable based inks break down faster and are easier to get rid of during the recycling process.

The truth is, despite the many billions of hardbound and paperback books there are present on the shelf today, still even more unread manuscripts are waiting to be published. Publishers and agents receive incredible loads of unsolicited manuscripts on a day-to-day basis. If the company does not entertain unsolicited work, none of them are ever even read. But if by any chance one or two of these packages gets through, they would have to pass yet another long-winded process to finally make it out into the world alive. However, like any other goal and process there are other ways, backdoors, to getting a book published.

Before getting there, one must be able to write well. This means having gone through the long and tedious process of writing “barely tolerable” manuscripts and of receiving painfully honest critiques. To judge the quality of a piece of literature is not the job of the author who wrote it; most written work sound spectacular to the ears of those who made them but could not, by any possible means, be endured by common readers. Before making the first attempt at getting a book published, it is necessary for that book go have gone through serious, unbiased, and critical editing.

Getting there the traditional way

Persistence is a key ingredient in this business. A constant delivery of manuscripts to publishers and agents, although seemingly futile, is bound to get some attention. Although rejections may be expected, these must not become a hindrance to the possibility of publication. It is, however, truly important not to harass people by forcing unsolicited manuscripts or unwanted personal contact. Doing so will burn the chances of authoring a book altogether.

Making a name first

It is not uncommon that a book by a virtually anonymous, first-time author cannot get the attention it deserves. However, if that virtually anonymous first-time author makes his way to Hollywood by sheer luck or talent, then any book that would come out from beneath his pen would attract mind-blowing sales and readership. If the material can’t come first, then the author can — by making front-page news.

Going solo

When all else fails, there is always the option to self-publish a manuscript. This way, the author is not at the mercy of publishers and agents who will determine whether or not his book is worthy of making it to the shelves; he can make it happen himself. One very important prerequisite to self-publication is rigorous editing, since nobody else will take charge of this task but the author himself — unless he chooses to hire a personal editor. Also, a considerable sum of money needs to be set aside for printing, distribution, marketing, and advertising, all of which will be covered by the writer for the sale of his book.

Spiral binding is one popular method of securing loose printed pages using single or double loop wire that fits into round or rectangular holes in the pages. Spiral binding allows the books to lay flat when opened cover to cover. Spiral binding is used for blank notebooks and for reports, mostly for books that have a short shelf life. Spiral binding is commonly used for cookbooks, calendars, and instruction manuals where the books have to be opened wide. Spiral binding is elastic and does not get out of shape easily. Spiral binding is available in almost every color to coordinate with the covers and can be easily cut to any length. Spiral binding requires punching and inserting equipment. Spiral binding elements are available in diameters from 6mm (1/8″) up to 32mm (1-1/16″) and either 12″ or 36″ lengths.

Ring binding is another method of securing loose printed pages with rings to hold the pages through holes punched in the pages. This form of binding is often used for procedural manuals or documentation where changes are frequently made. Another form of spiral binding is the double loop wire binding. Double loop wire binding is mostly used for contemporary, professional documents. Like spiral bound documents, double loop bound documents also lay flat and wrap around for easy reading. As a bonus, the pages are bound so securely that they won’t fall out and documents maintain their neat appearance for the lifetime of the information. Double binding is mostly used for a longer shelf life than the spiral bound documents.

There are three different types of wire binding, the 3:1 pitch, 2:1 pitch and Spiral-O. 3:1 wire means that the machine will punch three holes per inch, 2:1 wire machines will punch two holes per inch and Spiral-O wire, also known as wire comb binding since it uses the same style of punching die as plastic comb, punches 19 total holes along the 11 inch side of a standard sheet of paper. A double loop wire machine is easy to operate. After punching the paper, insert the wire and close the wire, using the wire closer normally provided with the machine.
